“Real Housewife” Bethenny Frankel is every bit as normal as you and me

Just your average housewife stocking up on Hanes boy shorts, round makeup sponges and makeup-remover cloths at SuperTarget, Bethenny Frankel impatiently tapped a five-inch heel near the checkout counter.

“We’ve got to go, Bethenny,” her assistant pleaded. “You’ve got a TV appearance. It’s live.”

“But I promised that woman I’d sign her book. She’s going to be devastated.”

It’s possible that appearing in “The Real Housewives of New York City,” Bravo TV’s guilty pleasure, gives the suddenly famous a somewhat skewed perspective on devastation.

In her defense, Frankel, an unmarried, childless natural-food chef who swiftly parlayed celebrity into an array of products from 100-calorie margaritas to yoga pants, wouldn’t be wearing full makeup and a form-fitting Kay Unger dress (comped) at St. Paul’s Midway SuperTarget in the middle of the afternoon if commoners didn’t treat her like a star. In almost every aisle, young women pushing red carts gasped and pulled out their cell-phone cameras when they spotted Frankel, happily browsing through cosmetic bags, workout gear and — can you say Season 3 finale in the making? — baby clothes. (”The clock is definitely ticking,” the 38-year-old said.)

“Seriously, I love your show,” announced a young blonde who came face to face with Frankel in housewares. “Like, I’m not even kidding.”

“Did you buy my book?” Frankel asked.
